Enabling ALL individuals of our society to be creative, inventive and capable of prototyping with suitable materials will democratize the innovation process. Along with my students I have implemented a session on designing and building prosthetic devices for high school students, and have implemented it in our MechSE high school girls’ camp (Girls Adventures in Math Engineering and Science) and at Uni High. In these sessions, students work on designing and building prosthetics for disabled individuals, assemble and use fiber-architectured pneumatic muscles designed in our labs to actuate them. Through this activity, I emphasize the design and selection of materials as well as the mechanics and kinetics of motion and how they govern the device level performance.
